Anything Hippo! This is a day to celebrate being a Hutto Hippo!!
Permitting is underway to have the event in Downtown Hutto in the area of East and Farley.
Music, merchandise vendors, food and drink vendors and maybe some surprises!!
World Hippo Day occurs every year on February 15th. This is a day to celebrate the majestic animal and encourage people to take action against its extinction. Did you know, that there are no known predators of the Hippopotamus other than man??
In Hutto, we celebrate this day as we are the ONLY city that has a mascot as a Hippo.
As legend has it that in 1915, a circus train stopped in Hutto to gather supplies and to care for the animals. At some point, a Hippo escaped from its keeper and ran towards Cottonwood Creek. The train depot agent sent the following message to neighboring cities. "Stop trains. Hippo loose in Hutto".
And as they say, the rest is history!
At last count, there are over 3,000 concrete Hippos located in Hutto.
